The rapidly increasing application of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing for undersea acoustic links demands techniques for eliminating the various synchronization issues at the receiver. OFDM also requires an estimate of the channel parameters at the receiver for undoing the channel effects. This paper presents techniques for handling the synchronization issues as well as a method for estimating the channel state information, exploiting the sparsity of the channel impulse response. The results indicate that these techniques are promising and decisive in characterizing the OFDM underwater channel.
